Description

Aluminum Alloy AA6060 is an alloy in the wrought aluminium-magnesium-silicon family. It is much more closely related to the alloy 6063 than to 6061. The main difference between 6060 and 6063 is that 6063 has a slightly higher magnesium content. It can be formed by extrusion, forging or rolling, but as a wrought alloy it is not used in casting. It cannot be work hardened, but is commonly heat treated to produce tempers with a higher strength but lower ductility.

Aluminium Alloy AA6060 is a versatile and widely used material in various industries due to its unique combination of properties. It is part of the 6000 series of aluminium alloys, which are known for their excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, and ease of fabrication. AA6060 specifically belongs to the 6xxx subgroup, which is alloyed with magnesium and silicon, imparting desirable mechanical and thermal properties. This alloy finds applications in sectors ranging from automotive components to architectural structures due to its balanced characteristics.

Aluminium Alloy AA6060 is primarily composed of aluminium, with magnesium and silicon as its main alloying elements. These alloying elements contribute to the alloy's enhanced strength and improved response to heat treatment processes. The microstructure of AA6060 typically consists of equiaxed grains of aluminium matrix with finely dispersed Mg2Si precipitates. The uniform distribution of these precipitates contributes to the alloy's strengthening mechanisms and provides resistance against deformation and wear.

Aluminium Alloy AA6060 offers satisfactory corrosion resistance due to its alloying elements, particularly silicon. Silicon forms a protective oxide layer on the surface of the alloy, preventing further corrosion and enhancing its durability. This property makes AA6060 suitable for outdoor and marine applications where exposure to moisture and environmental factors is significant.

The versatility of Aluminium Alloy AA6060 makes it well-suited for a wide range of applications. In the automotive industry, it is used for components such as door frames, roof rails, and radiator supports due to its lightweight nature and corrosion resistance. In architectural applications, AA6060 is used for window frames, curtain walls, and structural members, benefiting from its excellent formability and aesthetic appeal. Its usage also extends to consumer electronics, sports equipment, and industrial machinery components.
